A squadron of Union Cavalry led by Captain McIntyre of the Forth U.S. Cavalry protected Kelly's Ford on the Rappahannock River during the battle and until all retreating Union forces passed. On their return to Fredericksburg the squadron destroyed a bridge over the Rappahannock. The squadron retreated to Stafford Court House and then to Aquia Creek where they embarked to Washington.
