This might be a little bit of a stretch but there was a John T. (maybe Thomas?) Halligan on the 1860 census in Petersburg VA. He was born approx 1834 (close to your 1835 date). It appears that this man was with the 3rd Battalion Reserves (Archers) and enlisted in Petersburg. Something to look into....good luck!
