I went back through my files and have discovered that the picture of the flag I was thinking about is acutally one presented to the Smyth Dragoons, which, as a cavalry company, was initially part of the 50th Va. Inf, but later served as A/8th Va. Cav. The picture of that flag is in the History of Smyth County, Virginia, Vol. 2, by Joan Tracy Armstrong, Smyth County Historical and Museum Society, Marion, Va. 1986.
