The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Looking for info on D.F. Miller 5th VA Co. D

Hi all... I'm trying to research a D.F. Miller of the 5th Virginia Co. D of Moffatts Creek, Augusta County, VA. I have in my possession a letter written from him to J.D. Woods of the 28th NY Lockport, NY. It is dated June 20, 1883. From what I have gathered J.D. Woods became a Confederate prisoner at the battle of Cedar Mountain. In the letter Miller thanks Woods for papers he sent him. He further explains how he enjoyed his trip north and was very pleased by the people of New York. I'm guessing they met while Woods was a prisoner but would like to see if I can find more of a connection between them.

The letter goes on with Miller telling Woods about escorting prisoners off the Cedar Mountain Battlefield and how one of them fell during a volley. He explains he never knew what came of that man. He also explained how one man he escorted, a Sgt, gave him a map to remember him but it did not contain his name.

The letter contained $20.00 CSA along with an Augusta County 50 cent note that Miller sent to Woods. If anyone is interested I can type the content of the letter or email a scanned copy.

Thanks!
