Does anyone know if there were any cavalry units associated with the 5th Va Infantry? I know that some infantry regiments were originally organized with one or more cavalry companies which later reorganized into separate cavalry regiments.

The reason I ask is because one of my ancestors (Jonathan -or John- Baker) initially enlisted on April 17, 1861 for 12 months with Co D of the the 5th Va Infantry and then, a year later, a muster roll record indicated that he was "Absent without Leave. Left April 17, 1862. Now in Cavalry Service" . I'm trying to track down which cavalry unit he may have gone into but, there are dozens of guys named 'John Baker' in the records of Virginia cavalry units. Hopefully, I can narrow the number of likely cavalry units to research.
