GRAY, HARVEY: Pvt., Co. B. Born Floyd County 5/43. 1860 cen., age 18, Simpson's P.O., Floyd County. Enl., age 19, 3/13-15/62, Floyd C.H., Floyd County. AWOL from unit 6/10/62 through 12/31/62. Joined E/27th Va. Cav. Bn. 9/1/62, serving in that unit and E/25th Va. Cav. through 6/18/63. Court-martialed by 4/16/64 when trial results published. Guilty of "enlisting himself in another company, without a regular discharge from the one in which he last served." Sentenced to 12 months' hard labor "on the public works" with a ball and chain attached to his left leg. Sentence to be executed under direction of commanding officer at Richmond, “to whom he [Grey]will be sent, with copies of his sentence.” Hospitalized, cowpox, Richmond 4/29/64. There to 5/4/64 when sent to Castle Thunder, Richmond. To Salisbury by 10/31/64. Unexecuted portion of sentence remitted 11/21/64 "because of facts adduced after his trial and the unanimous recommendation of his commander." By order of President Davis, sentence remitted 12/1/64 and he was ordered to return to duty in unit. Hospitalized, chronic diarrhea, Richmond 12/31/64 to 2/10/65 when furloughed, 40-day sick leave. Applied for pension, age 82, in Roanoke County 7/22/1924: Mentioned service in 27th Va. Bn. Cav. and E/25th Va. Cav., but not his service in 42nd Va.; said his service ended when he was sent to hospital in 12/64. He did not go back to the army. Did not mention any wounds in service. Postwar 1909 company roster indicated he was wounded, unspecified place and date; however, the 1884 postwar company roster did not indicate a wound. Postwar farmer, Franklin County, 1870 and Floyd County, 1880. Teamster, Roanoke County, 1900; farm laborer there, 1910. Living, age 77, Roanoke County, 1920. Applied for pension, age 82, in Roanoke County 7/22/1904. Died 1928. Buried East Hill Cem., Salem, Roanoke County.
