Ancestry.com family files relate this story regarding George Preston King:

"George was born in 1813 the son of John and Isabella King. In 1834 he married Nancy P. Bennett, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Bennett, and also the sister of his brother Charles's wife (Jane). George and Nancy had eight children; John J. born 1839 and married Virginia C.; Rebecca born 1841; James A. born 1843, married Eliza Jane Smith in 1865; Isabel born 1846, married George P. Persinger; Elzena C. born 1848, married George W. Tingler; Joseph H. born 1850, married Sarah M. Craft; Sarah A. King born 1853 with no record of marriage; George W. born 1862, married Maria H. George had a farm of about 300 acres located just off Rich Patch Road at the Big Mountain Road turn off. George was a prosperous farmer, a progressive and industrious man. On adjoining land was the King Charcoal Pit where wood was burned into charcoal to use in the Alleghany County furnaces. George's house still stands and Mr. and Mrs. John Craft are the present owners. George passed away in 1862 and his wife remarried William Jackson Persinger on January 2, 1866. In the 1880 Census it is listed that Nancy P. Persinger as the head of the household. Daughter, Sarah Ann and son, George W. were living with her. Also two grandsons, Wilber G. and George E. and two granddaughters Josephine and Cassie B."

Although George P. may have served, the ages of sons John J. and James A. are more in line with those of Civil War soldiers.
