Looking for CSA records for ancestor: James Franklin Carter, resident of Patrick Co., VA, born about 1822 in Stokes, Co., NC, caucasian. I have App for pensions in 1900&1902, stating he served in Co.H, 23rd VA Battalion. Found research showing 51st VA infantry later renamed 23rd VA Infantry Battalion AND recruits came from Patrick Co, which makes it sound as if that would be his unit. However, have searched Soldiers&Sailors extensively, plugging in the 23rd, 51st, etc., etc., and cannot seem to find him anywhere. Help?
