Re: 50th Virginia Infantry Co E

Matt
After reviewing what I collected for the 1st ed., going into records now available to me through Ancestry.com, Footnote.com, Findagrave.com, Va. Confederate pension applications and other material I have collected and you provided, here is what I believe is the current list of 34 men in the 50th Va. Inf. killed in action, mortally wounded, or presumed to have been killed or mortally wounded during the Overland Campaign in May 1864 and at Bethesda Church on 2 June 1864. Those eight men listed as assumed KIA or MWIA were categorized that way for lack of evidence of Union POW records, Confederate hospital records, evidence of service in CS army after the Overland Campaign, or lack of evidence that the individual survived the war. New information may change the assumption or more precisely determine the date KIA or MWIA. Any additions and corrections are welcome.

Names of six men of 50th Va. Inf. counted in 1st ed. as KIA during Overland Campaign based primarily on the lack at the time of access to some Union POW records and Confederate hospital records. Subsequent and wider access to Union POW records and Unfiled Papers of CS soldiers in National Archives and evidence that some men survived the war changed the status of these men. One reason for the initial lack of Union POW records is that Union records identified many of these men, as well as others known to have been captured, as members of H/5th Va. Inf. Similar misidentifications have been found among soldiers of the 48th and 42nd Va. captured at Spotsylvania C.H. on 12 May 1864.
