Re: Lt. Early's section of cannon at Five Forks

There are a number of Lt. Earlys in the artillery. However, since you have described an action by elements of Braxton's (Pegram's) Artillery Battalion of the 2nd Corps, the most likely candidate is 1Lt Wm Early of the Lee Lynchburg (Hardwicke's) Artillery Battery. At the time of Five Forks, Early had been detached for some time from the Lee Lynchburg Artilery and was commanding a section of the Allegheny Artillery (Capt. John C. Carpenter's battery). He was killed at his guns at Five Forks. Details of his conduct and action can be found in The Giles, Alleghany and Jackson Artillery, Keith S. Bohannon, H.E. Howard, Inc., Lynchburg, 1990
