A little bit about the Confederate guns at 5 forks

Diary of William Gordon McCabe:

March 30:

At about 11 a.m.received orders to assist Fitz Lee who was fighting Sheridan's cavalry. Moved off at once taking Ellet's battery 3-inch rifles and two 3-inch under Lt. Early, Lt. Col. Braxton's battn, 2nd Corps.

April 1:

At 10 o'clock we put 3 guns, one of Ellet's and Early's section, in position in the centre, and Ellet's other 3 on the right commanding a field.

This excerpt is from the diary of John R. Zimmerman of the 17th Va. Inf. of Corse's Brigade:

"Corse's brigade was on the extreme right, then Terry's brigade, and next beyond that was Geo. H. Steuart, Hunton's brigade not yet up. Two other small brigades (Ransom's and Wallace) I hear are beyond Steuarts and

Gen. W.H.F. Lee (Rooney) Div. join us on our right flank, Fitz Lee's division of cavalry on the left of our line with i think some of Gen. Rosser's cavalry protecting our left flank. We quickly threw down the

fencing and build a rude breastworks against which we shoveled some earth. A battery of six 3-inch rifled guns from Col.Pegram's battalion were brought up and distributed along our line, three pieces on our right

(one just next to me) and three pieces on our left."

". . . we then realized the enemy were pressing back the left of our line. Two regiments were sent to their support and a battery of artillery was rushed by us to reinforce and aid that section of our line, but

soon the drivers returned with their horses, calling out to us as they passed us "Oh boys they have got our guns." They had just placed their guns in position and unlimbered when the enemy broke through our thin

line at thst point and captured our guns."

I think the guns that rushed by Corse's men belonged to Carpenter's Battery.
