Re: Co. H 22nd Virginia Battalion, Infantry

The Robert L. Brake Collection at the Military History Institute in Carlisle, PA has a folder for Henry Heth (division commander) containing an 18 October 1864 letter from Heth to General Lee recommending the disbanding of the 22nd Virginia Battalion. Heth writes concerning Gettysburg that "Colonel Brockenbrough ... reported to me that [on 3 July 1863] he did not believe that 20 men of the 22 VA Battalion went into the charge ... that they shamefully ran away under the shelling prior to the charge." See also Thomas M. Rankin's book on the 22nd in The Virginia Regimental Histories Series, 1999. The book's roster indicates that Company H lost one man captured on 3 July, another on 6 July in Pennsylvania, and 10 men captured at Falling Waters, Maryland on 14 July as the army recrossed the Potomac.
