Re: Crown Hill Cem.,Clifton Forge,Va.

Based on Terry Lowry's 22nd Virginia Infantry, G.W. Huddleston, QMSgt., in that unit entered the R.E. Lee Soldiers Home, Richmond, in 1915, age 78 and was discharged from there, insane, in February 1917.

Nicholas H. Kern is a more difficult case. According to his NA CSR, he never mustered in to the 60th Va. A Nicholas H. Kern, age 74, filed a pension application in March 1914. He was then living in Clifton Forge. He claimed service in the 31st Bn Va. Reserves, under Col. Morton and Capt Hansbrough. He also said he was detailed in May 1862 at "Salt Peter Cave" until spring of 1864, when he could no longer work and was discharged in June 1864.

There is a CSR (1 card) for N.H. Kern as a Pvt., Co. B, 1st Nitre Bn [Va] Volunteers, who enlisted at Jackson [Jackson's Ferry, Wythe Co], age 25, on 14 Nov 1863. Lt. R.C. Morton enlisted him. Capt. George H. Johnson was the co. commander. B/1st Nitre Battalion later became 7th Bn Local [Va] Defense Troops in February 1864, with Maj. R.C. Morton in command. B/1st Nitre Bn became K/7th Bn Va Local Defense Troops.
