After receiving a better copy of the letter, it has been determined the man's name was Sheridan.
However, after searching further, I found that Charles Sheridan Newman served in the 60th TN Mounted Infantry (AKA 79th Infantry). Trying to determine his exact enlistment date and military record.
Seems the letter writer may have confused Sheridan with another Newman brother.
