Galvanized Yankee 52nd Virginia

Just a few days ago a terrible thunder storm hit Columbus, Ohio. A huge tree fell down over some Union tombstones at Green Lawn Cemetery located in Columbus. One of the tombstones #37 that was broken belonged to a Union Private named Ephraim Olbraum who was listed as being with the Rocky Mountain Company. Hats off to Brent Nimmo for his great detective work in solving this case. This soldiers real name was Ephraim Calhoun of Company E 52nd Virginia Infantry. According to his CMSR's he was captured in Preston County (W) Virginia in March of 1863. He was taken to Camp Chase and released on June 3, 1863. About 40 Confederates turned Yankee at that time from the Camp Chase Prison and Private Calhoun was amoung them. He joined the 11th Ohio Cavalry and was sent to Camp Dennison to help defend Cincinnati from Morgan's Raiders should they have come that way. He died on July 7, 1863 and was buried at the Union soldiers section of Green Lawn Cemetery. His wife received a Federal penison in 1868 in Washington State. The 11th OVI Cavalry was also known as the Rocky Mountain Cavalry because of their duty out in the Rocky Mountains. It's LT.COL was named Collins and Fort Collins, Colorado is named after him. LT.COL Collins also had a son in the 11th OVI Cavalry and was killed by Indians. His first name was Caspar and Casper, Wyoming was named after him. His new tombstone will be correct at Green Lawn. (Ephraim Calhoun 11th OVI Cavalry)
