Re: Anyone with ancestors from 39th VA Calvary?
My great grandfather, John Matthew Ratrie, served as a Private in Company B of the 39th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry. He was born on 4 March 1838 and died on 17 May 1908. In 1880 he lived in Union Dist., Harrison Co., WVA as a wagon maker. In 1900, he lived in Broad Run District, Loudoun Co., VA as a carpenter. Just prior to his death, he lived near Arcola, VA and owned 87 acres on Little River Turnpike (Rt. 50). I would be most interested in any information you may have about his service with the 39th Battalion. As a child, I often heard that he may have served as a messenger for Stonewall Jackson.
