30th Batt'VA.Sharpshooters

I have been looking for Richard W. Wine(s) - who enlisted in Roane Co.,(W)VA as a private in Co. F. of Clark's Battalion, CSA.
It seems he was written up as being AWOL on 31 October 1862. He evidently deserted in the Kanawha Valley of VA on 28 Oct. He was arrested and received from Wheeling, VA. He was transferred to Cairo, IL to Camp Chase, OH on 20 Nov 1862.

What battle would this man have been in during this very short length of time? It seemed that there were about 15 Roane Co., VA men who enlisted at the same time and they all seemed to go AWOL at the same time.

Have not seen any records about that many men doing the same thing at the same time. Can anyone help me?
Appreciate any thoughts on this.

Bette
