Re: Deserters killed at "Charity Chapel" 1864/1865

If memory serves correctly that event took place in Franklin County Va. It was two brothers that had both deserted the Confederate Army.

It was not uncommon to find deserters of both sides taking refuge in the western mountainous area of Va. Many of them turned to outlaw ways, preying on either side and any civilians that got in the way as well. Reportedly these two individuals reportedly had made threats to burning several vital grist mills in the area. Desertion alone would frequently be cause enough. However combined with being outlaws engaged in robbery and arson... well.... Justice was swift.
