A diary and letters by Franklin Gardner Walter, a member of Company A, 39th Battalion Virginia Cavalry, is on file at the Virginia State Library and Archives in Richmond, and also at the Handley Regional Library in Winchester. Walter writes that he joined up with "Capt. Pifer's command" on 20 June 1863, just days before the battle of Gettysburg. On 28 June he also mentions being directed by a Colonel Cole. During the campaign Walter was assigned to carry dispatches to various senior officers. Riding alone much of the time, it was not unusual for couriers to be captured in enemy territory. Two men from Company A were taken prisoner: Private James H. Fiddler on 25 June at Petersville, Maryland; and Private John William Hall on 30 June near Gettysburg.
