There were apparently two soldiers named James Montgomery in the 48th Virginia, but neither is listed as a Lieut.

James Montgomery

Residence Washington County VA; a 25 year-old Farmer.

Enlisted on 6/20/1861 at Washington County, VA as a Private.

On 6/20/1861 he mustered into "B" Co. VA 48th Infantry
He was Killed on 7/10/1863 at Williamsport, MD

He was listed as:
* On rolls 10/15/1861 (place not stated)
* Returned 4/30/1862 (place not stated)
* Detailed 2/28/1868 (place not stated) (Teamster)
