Lost letter from Company I, 18th Virginia

The Robert L. Brake Collection at the Military History Institute in Carlisle contains a letter in a folder marked unidentified, from William Fitzgerald to Mrs. George W. Jones, from Williamsport, Maryland, dated 11 July 1863. For many years the sender's identity had eluded me - until today. Fitzgerald wrote: "... fight a hard one and our company lost awfully. We carried in 40 men and brought out 15 untouched. I received a slight wound ... George received a flesh wound in the leg. He bled a good deal and seemed to be considerably exhausted ... I hated mightily to leave him but couldn't help myself. He, Captain Oliver, and several others were left in the hands of the good doctors ... Captain Oliver's right arm was cut off. Dr. Power was slightly wounded in the arm and leg." The men mentioned were in Company I ("Spring Garden Blues," Pittsylvania County), 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment, and the description is of Pickett's charge. Harrison and Busey's book, Nothing But Glory, was of assistance in making the identifications. Captain Elisha D. Oliver was indeed wounded in the right arm and captured; he was exchanged on 8 May 1864. First Lieutenant George W. Jones was shot in the leg and captured; he was exchanged on 22 March 1865. Second Lieutenant William Fitzgerald, Jr. was the author of the letter. William H. Power, in the same company, is listed as wounded, and he is listed as a medical student. From Lt. Fitzgerald's description it is deduced that Captain Oliver was brought back to a Confederate field hospital, where his arm was amputated; he was left behind when the Confederate army retreated and likely taken prisoner on 5 July. It's not entirely clear if the same thing happened to Lt. Jones, or if he was left upon the field to be taken by the Federals to one of their Corps hospitals late on 3 July.
