A lot of the guys joined the 22 nd Va Inf The history of the unit is detailed in the books by H E Howard, Inc of Lynchburg Va (1991) the specific book is "The Gauley, Mercer and Western Artillery" ISBN 1-56190-027-3 ALSO the Yankee version is found in Vol II of Rutherford B Hayes book Vol II www.rbhayes.org He was the commander of the 23 Rd O.V. unit that invaded the Mercer County-Gauley WVa area and kept daily journals. He was a lawyer from Cincinati Oh and later became U S President.
