I do not have information on his units history. However, the records show that he remained a Private and there is no record of promotion nor wounding.

He contacted Malaria which put him on the sick list a lot.

He apparently overstayed his sick furlough explaining his listing as AWOL on the February 18, 1865 muster roll. there does not appear to be a later company muster roll in the records. Therefore, we cannot ascertain his later service.

As such, I would not consider that he deserted, nor from these records have information as to his later life.

Have you investigated the pension lists to see if he ever applied for a pension? Pensions were first authorized ca 1885 or so, and were obtained from the state in which the veteran was residing when he applied. They were, in general, restricted to those in an indigent status.
