Re: 26th Virginia Infantry uniforms

In June of 1864, most of the units within Beauregards Dept of So.Va. and the ANV were drawing uniforms and equipment from the Richmond Depot. There would be a similarity in appearance of these troops regardless of state of origin, or which Brigade they were in. A general uniformity of goods amongst most of them. As mentioned time/place was a factor as to what this "snap-shot" would or could have looked like. What the average soldier in the 26th Va looked like in June 1861.... June 1862... and June 1864 was significantly different from each.... If you chose June 1864... also depends on how authentic to that appearance you wish to be...

The preponderance of hat brass, hat badges, hat cords and adornment of dead animal parts... as well as decorative state pins, fraternal pins, breast plates, cartridge box plates, CS oval and incorrect Va State rectangle belt plates by this period of the war is predominately a reenactorism fancy. Which is not generally supported by any actual historical evidence. Simple is better... less is more...

I would suggest to avoid the CS oval... Use of captured unaltered US goods around Petersburg was also common, as Jim mentioned. Same here... finding lots of US plates in Confederate camps and fortifications all around Petersburg as well as the Appomattox retreat routes.... but assuming you would want a more genuine CS issue appearance.

There was a small run of the "Virginia Pattern" "CSA" rectangle buckle, that was a local made copy of what had also been produced and issued out of the Atlanta Depot to western troops, but the pattern is slightly different. The Va pattern is fairly rare, not a common issue. Most of what the sutlers are selling is the Atlanta Pattern... not the Va Pattern version.... Since they were rare, most people chose something else to go with what was most common or more likely representative of the unit in question.... By this time of the war Richmond was still producing and issuing roller buckles, forked tongue and Georgia Frames as they had done for a couple years by then.... These were utilitarian.. not intended to be decorative. "Georgia Frame" is a simple solid cast brass frame buckle. squared with a center cross bar. One outer bar had two prongs facing inward that fit through the leather belt holes... (it had dual set of holes). Referred to as a "Georgia Frame" because it is believed to be the design origins. However Richmond also locally produced and issued these but the originating namesake stuck. You could find these used by western troops too. It is also one of the few buckles that one can safely use over the greatest period of time from 1862-65... in either theater of the war...
