Re: 26th Virginia Infantry uniforms

To over generalize....

The issues that were most common to June 1864 time frame in the ANV would generally be what is labeled as the Richmond Depot Type-II shell jacket. Either domestic Grey Jean Cloth or of the English imported Blue-Grey Army wool army cloth. Trousers may or might not have been of the same fabric. Trousers generally wore out 2-3 times faster than the jacket on the average.

Confederate haversacks coming out of Richmond would commonly be a tarred/painted/oil cloth version. It differed from the Federal style as it had an unpainted drill strap... drill lining sewn in (not detachable like Federal ones) and single button closure. Canteens would normally be of the Confederate tin drum style at this point in time. The Arsenal was gathering and repairing captured Federal canteens and reissuing them but that's another story.

Inverted US waist belt plate... A bit of overuse by some reenactors, which originally spawned off a single photographic image of a western confederate wearing one in such fashion. Photos of confederate dead that are wearing them are actually being worn right side up.... It served a purpose, many soldiers could care less where it came from or what was on it.....

If your compiling all this for your own personal use and/or display purposes that's one thing. If your actually planning to join a specific reenactment group then I would suggest to do nothing right now and wait till after you join that unit. See what their given standards and uniform requirements are. Otherwise you might be spending money on items they don't actually use. The unit in question may or may not actually use or wear what the historical unit originally received. Also they might have a different focused snap-shot of time as their primary impression preference. If they happen to pick mid-late 1862 time frame then all this other stuff mentioned here reflecting the summer of 1864 might not be of much use.

I understand the natural desire to be part of a given unit that ones ancestor might have served in. However the unit in question might or might not currently be active or exist... If it does it might be found based half way across the country from where you reside... Probably just as many portrayed "Virginia" units actually based out of Pennsylvania, New York or Ohio, than are actually resident in Virginia..... Might be ok for some of the larger 150th events, where everybody does a bit of traveling... but likewise a disadvantage when they engage in local meetings, local living history programs too far from you. Also the fact that a unit in question might not be of the caliber or forte of what you actually desire to do.... Not all are created equal.... Many folks tend to join units based in their local area or region, and/or have similar standards, mindset and forte of what you want, regardless of the name or unit being portrayed. Many view it as still able to honor ones ancestor by just participating in the hobby somewhere... Others mileage may vary...
