Re: Tallassee Mill Site CSA Armory

Hello,
I was under the impression that the "Tallassee Arsenal" was captured by someone, althogh I am not sure who. I have also read of a battle or skirmish about a mile east of Tallassee. but I can't find any proof or info on either story. An article in a Treasure Hunter magazine about lost Confederate Gold said a shipment of gold woth from between $200,000.00 to $285,000.00 was on its way from out west or somewhere, to Savannah, Ga. They were attacked by yankees about a mile east of Tallassee. The article said they burried the gold next to or near a small creek about a mile east of Tallassee. The article said one version has it buried near a shapr bend in the creek, the another version said near a fence. Anyway, the Confederates were more or less defeated. The surviving Confederates of the little expidition duly reported to the authorities in Savannah they were ordered to report to. But they reported what had happened and said that the men who buried the gold were killed and the rest had to get away. They could not find it again afterward. The authorities just more or less blew it all off, as thus the fortunes of war, and as the war was near over and lost anyway. Interesting huh? I wish I could find it.
Take care,
Dave
