Bit more: Co E of the 37th was made-up mostly of
those from Henry County and enrolled at Woodville
in Mar and Apr of 1862 by Capt A.C. Gordon and
Jacob L. Skipper; Gordon actually enrolled most
of the men for Capt Skipper's company; others who
served with Capt Skipper: 1st Lt J.R. Smith; 2d
Lt J.L. Stapleton; 2d Lt J.W. Granger; 2d Lt and
later Capt, Joel G. Green; 2d Lt and later 1st Lt
J.G. Purcell and 2d Lt G.A. Chafield.

The regiment was organized at Auburn, Ala May 2,
1862 with muster rolls beginning that date; it was accepted as a regiment May 13, 1862 under the
command of Colonel J.F. Dowdell; the regiment
was first under fire at Iuka, Miss in Sep 1862.
