Re: 46th AL Co. C -- questions re: Demopolis/Vicks

Kathy --

After looking at the records a second time, note that the printed War Department card for hospital paroles at Vicksburg says July 15th, while the actual parole document signed by Moreland is dated July 16th. Most officers and men of the 46th Alabama appear to have signed paroles on July 9th. These forms were hastily produced on site by Federal soldiers after the surrender agreement on July 4th.

All the above is true of Richard Massey of Company "C", whose name also appears on a list of men furloughed at Enterprise, Miss., July 22, 1863. Note that Massey's records appear in two different service files (Masey, Massey).

Here are other records from Company "D" which repeatedly show the date July 22, 1863, Enterprise, Miss.:

I would have to assume that Moreland was too sick to travel home from Enterprise.

Does anyone happen to know the length of furloughs granted? I'm almost certain it was longer than thirty days, but not as long as ninety days.
