Not that it really explains why he may have joined the 16th Ala. Inf., but note that the Memphis and Charleston Railroad went directly from Memphis through Courtland. The 16th Ala. Inf. was formed in Courtland on August 6, 1861. Maybe he was travelling by rail, and he just happened to be in Courtland when the patriotic spirit came over him!
