For whatever purpose it served, some companies kept records of home post offices for members. I'm looking at a consolidated roll of Co. "G", 11th Alabama Infantry, which has post offices for all 121 members.
There are even a few consolidated post office lists, one entry for each one. These were composed in the 5th Alabama Battalion. They must date after May 1863 as the list included Mobile, which was the primary post office of men who belonged to disbanded Co. "D".
By the way, Robert E. Lee, delived a rather stern rebuke to his wife for burdening an acquaintance with the duty of delivering a letter to him.
