Alabama Reserves
In Response To: Re: 3rd State Guard ()

Very interesting. Is it possible the 64th and 65th regiments existed but did not receive the official title before the end of the war?

Stewart Sifakis' Compendium of the Confederate Armies: indicates the 65th Alabama infantry captured at Girard. Also indicates both 3rd and 4th Ala. Res. Regts. (which formed the 65th) were in district of Central Ala. in spring 1865, so both were perhaps with Adams. Assuming 3rd and 4th Ala. Res. Battalions did form the 65th, they may have been junior reserves that turned 18. The 1st Ala. Res. Battalion formed the 4th Ala. Res. Regt. If these were juniors, it is possible that the 4th Ala. Res. Regt. became the 64th.

Have not seen reference to the 2nd Ala. Res. Battalion?

What became of Gen. Thomas' reserve cavalry regiment (commanded by Huger) in Pillow's command in 6/64? Was this same as Lockharts/1st Ala. Res. Regt./63rd infantry which was also commanded by Huger?

Wilie Pope (thanks Mr. Pitts!): indicates the 3rd Ala. Res. Regt. was at Montevallo under command of Gen. Dan Adams winter/spring 1865. Approx. 250 Ala. reserves were captured at battle of Ebenezer church. Must have been the 3rd, explaining why few of them made it to Selma or beyond. 3rd and 4th Ala. Res. Battalions were at Montgomery in spring 1865, and probably moved with Adams, who must have reached Montgomery without a command, to Girard.

In addition to the 3rd Ala. Res. Regt., the following are clues that some un-titled reserve command(s) were at Ebenezer Church and Selma (perhaps either the 4th Ala. Res. Regt., the 64th infantry, cavalry reserves, and/or the 2nd Ala. Res. Battalion).

Campaigns of General Forrest: on Roddey's right "Adams with the remains of the State troops, and a small infantry battalion from Selma, resting rightward on Mulberry creek".

Reminiscences of a Mississippian: the 1st Mississippi cavalry "moved late in the afternoon towards the works again, taking a road that led a little northeast, but did not pass through the works on this road, but when we reached them, turned and moved west along them. I remember where the works crossed the road I speak of, there was a small force, some two or three hundred Alabama state troops, posted."
