Refusal

I have recently been reading about the Battle of Bentonville and have come across a term with which I am not familiar. Several times it is said that Pettus' Brigade "refused" it's flank. Does this mean a physical pull back of that flank or is the term referring to a static defense, while the remainder of the brigade would advance? My knowledge of C.W. tactics is inadequate to enlighten me. Can anyone help? By the way, the spell check is a definite improvement of the board.
