"Roads and Revenue"

There was some discussion a short time back about the required service of citizens for road construction and/or maintenance. I wanted to add something I read in Larry Noble's book "Old Autauga Portrait of A Deep South County". It appears from his writing that this practice was still in place up to and throughout the War.

......every able-bodied man between the ages of 18 and 45 was required to spend at least 10 days each year working on the roads. In Autauga County a Commissioner's Court was established and charged primarily with "Roads and Revenue". The earliest records of this Court have been lost. However, from 1842 through 1868, the minutes of this Court still exist, and their pages are filled with many entries related to the assignement of overseers of road and bridge construction and maintenance for the various sections of the county.
