Re: "Roads and Revenue"
In Response To: "Roads and Revenue" ()

Barry,

I just happen to have on my desk at the moment a page of notes I made while on a trip to Clarke County, Alabama [not dated].

Commissioners Court Minutes:
Suggsville No. 3--Ordered that John Martin be appointed overseer of the Road from Simmons Creek to Suggsville 26 Precinct...third Monday (15th) of Nov. 1858.

Minutes Commissioners Court
19 day of January 1863
It is ordered from the Court that John Y. Martin be appointed overseer of the road from the Six Mile post to Simmons Ford 27 Precinct and 3 Grade for the term of two years.

And another book--dilapidated
Minutes Commissioners Court (1837-1849)

May 1840
Ordered that Thomas Martin be appointed overseer of the road from the Tenth Township line to sign board [?] at Edward Cato's Place 2, No. Grade.

Ordered that John Martin be appointed overseer of the road from ___[?] equal to where said road intersects the Clarkesville road Feb. 1841 term.

Feb. 1843--appointed Thomas Martin overseer of the road from the 7 mile post to Joseph Nailes--Coffeeville Beat.

The 1863 posting indicates a term of two years; however, if the others stated a time period, I did not record it. Could be the two year term was unusual length of time, therefore, designated.
