A big thanks goes out to John C. Carter & Homer Jones
for answering my questions concerning some MVC buttons
that I had acquired from a CW relic hunter. After
receiving your messages on which specific Alabama units
were at Gaines Mill, I asked the digger if he had found
any other objects that might help identify the unit of
the buttons. He said he also found the remains of a hat
along with the brass numbers 11 and the letters ALA
Would one of you know anything on the 11th regiment of
Wilcox's brigade ? I have so far been unsuccessful in
finding out where Wilcox was in the battle, how many
men were killed & wounded, etc. This coat almost cer-
tainly belonged to an officer (with the 2 CS staff
officer's buttons with the MVC buttons), but interesting
that the surviving material is butternut in color, not
the typical gray.
