Quite a number of Gutterys from this area served on the Confederate side, at least one as a captain.
Since there are examples of Union men who owned slaves, it seems unlikely that politics had much to do with which side a man might choose. Old (or new) family feuds had more to do with Union/Confederate choices in the hill country. I've certainly found that to be true in Chilton County (southern Shelby/northern Autauga in 1860).
