Re: AL. Vol. Calvary-Col. Newman's Reg.

I meant to look up the reference to Newsom's command in "Tennesseans in the Civil War" but was distracted. A somewhat disoriented woman wandered up to our doorstep last night and we spent the evening trying to secure transportation for her to some other point. My wife clearly didn't care for me driving Miss Daisy, so we eventually got a cab driver willing to take directions to her next destination.

I'll try again tonight. The command served under Forrest in Hood's Tennessee Campaign, which would support this man's capture at the time and place mentioned. Perhaps there was an irregular command known as Newman's Cavalry, which may account for just three men being indexed under that designation. Perhaps someone will go through the Federal Provost Marshall's records for Alabama and produce a list of irregular Confederate commands which operated in this state.

As Ken mentioned, there was a company known as the "Franklin Scouts" which served under Capt. John E. Newsom", but they're from the wrong side of the state. This company went into service under Capt. William Houston and served for a few weeks as Co. "H", 1st Confederate Cavalry. Afterwards it became Co. "L", Roddey's 4th Alabama Cavalry.
