Co E, 53d Regiment, Ala Partisan Rangers, CSA

I am seeking information about John Alexander McLeod, also known as J. A. McLeod and John MacCloud.

According to a note from the War Department Jan 15, 1924 to the Alabama Pension Commission "John McCloud, also borne as J. A. McLeod prt. Co E 53rd. Regt. Ala. Partisan Rangers, C.S.A. enlisted in August 26, 1862 at Independence, Ala and on muster roll Nov and Dec 1863 (last on file)is shown Present. J. A. McLeod as prt. of above orgn. signs claim for reimbursement for a horse, his property, killed by order, June 29, 1864. Claim is dated Camp 53rd. Regt. Ala. Cav. Sept. 16, 1864. No capture, parole or later record has been found."

Is Independence in Autauga County? Does any one have a record of the 53rd Calvary? Are there muster rolls for this unit?
