Re: What Unit??? Help!

Reading the post and seeing the reference to Forrest's Regiment related it to Russell's 4th Alabama Cavalry. I'm certainly not an expert on Tennessee units, but I don't recall Forrest's "Old" Regiment being known in the field as the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry. It appears in the OR as Balch's Battalion or the 26th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion for some time. As mentioned in the other post, the War Department didn't get around to recognizing some of the organizational changes in this unit until July 1864, and that's when it received the designation, 3rd Tennessee Cavalry.

It's easy to confuse Jeffrey Forrest's Cavalry with his brother's better known regiment. The former appears on the Alabama NARA microfilm as Forrest's Alabama Regiment.

It's quite possible this man ended the war with Addison Harvey's company. Captain Harvey had the curious distinction of being killed by citizens looting Columbus GA after Wilson and his men left the town in April 1865.
