A Confederate hospital had been established there in the early summer and was still in operation. I believe it was also a Confederate military post, like Selma and Demopolis.

Military posts often included a quartermaster depot, a commissary depot and a hospital. By late 1863 or early 1864 recruiting officers had offices in most county seats.
