I understand that Gainsville was the 4th largest town in Alabama in 1860. Gen. Forrest and his troops were paroled there. Very nice Monument near the River. Also about 200 unknown confederate soldiers are buried in the old town Cemetery, located about one mile South town. Several of the old homes and churches remain in good condition. nice place to visit. Check in with the local Post Office Lady for details.
