I have access to National Archives service records of Alabama soldiers as well as pension applications filed with the State of Alabama. If you're interested, please contact me at pittsj14@hotmail.com

Members of the "Tallassee Guards" of Tallapoosa County elected officers at Tallassee AL July 7, 1861. They entered Confederate service July 19, 1861, at Montgomery AL as Company "F", 13th Alabama Alabama Infantry Regiment. Company captains were:

Solomon T. Strickland. Resigned due to failure of his health June 16, 1862.

James V. Ashurst. Promoted Captain [June 29,] 1862, to rank June 16, 1862. Wounded and disabled at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Retired to the Invalid Corps on June 9, 1864.

James Morris Simpson. Promoted Captain June 17, 1864, to rank June 9, 1864. Paroled at Montgomery, Alabama, May 17, 1865. [See Dictionary of Alabama Biography 4:1558] The Simpson family papers are referenced here:

Here's a good page on the regiment:

Here's the regimental flag captured at gettysburg on July 3rd:

You'll also find the regimental history here:

Of course soldiers of the 13th Alabama were among the first on the field at Gettysburg. There's a reference to the regiment in this website:

If you look through this page, there's a story about Company "F" and the possibility that men from this command killed General Reynolds on July 1, 1863:

Here's the story of Dr. Clarkson, surgeon of the regiment, who tended the wounded at Gettysburg:
