Gen. Christopher C. Andrews' 2nd division, Gen. Granger's XIII corps, marching with Gen. Frederick Steele's expeditionary force, camped at Hall's Mill near Stockton the night of April 1, 1865. The next morning, the division marched along the Blakely road from Stockton to the sound of the guns. Gen. Hawkin's division of USCT, also of Gen. Steele's expeditionary force, which had arrived before Blakely on the 1st, had been attacked by troops belonging to Gen. Cockrell's division.
