The incident you described is easily the best candidate. It appears in the Official Records as Feb. 13, 1863, Action, Rover TN. Federal units involved were the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry; 4th Michigan Cavalry; 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry, 2nd & 3rd Tennessee Cavalry, and one section of Battery "D" 1st Ohio Light Artillery.

The parent's claim would be for back pay due the soldier. The original document may say where he died as well. Often these kind of probate documents appear in the soldier's CSR.
