One evening just prior to the Seven Days a number of men in Company "C" presented Capt. Saunders with a petition. They felt he was too strict a disciplinarian and wanted him to resign. Saunders glanced at the document, tossed it into the fire, and announced that if anyone presumed to question his authority again, he would prefer charges.
There were no more petitions, and the men of his company soon began to appreciate his leadership in battle.
