I don't recall another Morris, but I'll go back and check. A tanner could possibly be exempt from service, but not solely by virtue of his profession. If he had a contract with the government to produce shoes or some other leather product, he could receive a specific grant of exemption. Here's section 11 of the law:

SEC. 11. That the president be, and he is hereby authorized to grant details, under general rules and regulations to be issued by the war department, either from persons between forty-five and fifty years of age, or from the army in the field in all cases where, in his judgment, justice, equity and necessity require such details, and he may revoke such orders of details whenever he thinks proper: provided that the power herein granted to the president to make details and exemptions shall not be construed to authorize the exemption or detail of any contractor for furnishing supplies of any kind to the government, by reason of said contract, unless the head or secretary of the department making such contract shall certify that the personal services of said contractor are indispensable to the execution of the contract: provided further, that when such contractor shall fail diligently and faithfully to proceed with the execution of such contract, his exemption or detail shall cease.

The governor's correspondence files in Montgomery contain many letters requesting exemption. Farmers in a particular community petition that a miller be allowed to remain at home to grind corn and wheat for them. A widow requests that her seventeen-year old son be allowed to stay home and look after the farm. Citizens in the Montevallo area sent a letter begging that retired Lt.Col. John P. West, formerly of the 2nd Ala. Cav. Regt., be released from service in the senior reserves to lead a home guard unit. Also many letters regarding specific exemptions went to General Jones M. Withers, commandant of reserves for the State of Alabama.
