Services of cavalry companies declined?
In Response To: February 1861. ()

One thing that prompted me to ask this question is a comment made by George Knox Miller in his history of the 8th Confederate. I quote:

"Until the provisional government of the Confederacy was organized the State [Alabama] declined to call any cavalry organization, and many members of this company, impatient at the delay, joined companies of infantry then organizing for service." George Knox Miller

Obviously this was very early in 1861, February or March perhaps but telling nonetheless. I believe a mounted company that was formed in Tallapoosa County in August of 1861 by Dr. C. S. Reeves suffered a similar fate. I am curious to know if anyone else has run across similar statements such as those made by Miller. The answer to this question may lie in Governor Moore's correspondence at the ADAH. Did the legislative act that created the AVC provide for mounted companies?
