Re: Engish's Independent Co of Mounted Inf

What was the date of the news article? The company involved was obviously from Baldwin County. The date, location and description as mounted infantry brought this letter to mind:

Stockton Ala.
March 2, 1865

To His Excellency Gov. Watts
Commander in Chief &c

Sir

In the absence of the Maj. Commandant 1st class Militia I beg leave to report that at the request of the Enrolling Officer of this county and the exigency of the case I have called out my company “Baldwin Guards” into camp to aid and assist the enrolling officer in the discharge of his duties. I have applied for and drawn rations from the Confederate authorities at Mobile for fifty men and horses. There has been manifested on the part of the men generally a good attitude and disposition to do their duty. I shall continue in camp and continue as many as fifteen men on duty to form a nucleus for the whole command when called out.

There are a number of persons say ten or a dozen in the county within the age of 2nd class, who are doing no duty, and for the want of a county commandant of the 2nd class are left without any orders to do any duty. I would respectfully suggest that Joseph Booth an exempt agriculturalist would make an efficient commandant 2nd class.

Very respectfully

G. B. Hall

Capt

Roll of Capt. G. B. Hall’s “Baldwin Guards” dated Sept. 10, 1864, for local defense. Stockton.
Sixty-nine privates, four corporals, five sergeant, three lieutenants, a captain and a commissary.
Described as mounted infantry, accepted and commissioned Oct. 4, 1864 to rank from Sept. 10, 1864.

Print on roll reads:
A company of Infantry or Mounted Infantry must consist of at least Sixty-four Privates.
Companies raised under the Act of Congress of 21st August, 1861, will not be considered in actual service for the purpose of receiving pay and subsistence, except when called for by the President.
They will not be called for until a necessity arises for service, and serve only so long as the emergency requires, and return again to their homes, and remain until called out again.
They will not be required to go beyond the limits of the State.
