Re: Confederate badges
In Response To: Confederate badges ()

I don't know of anyone, but personally, I'd be suspicious of such badges without a lot of verification. The following is from American Military Equipage v.2: "Military insignia was relatively rare in the Confederate service, and many a Southern enlisted man marched and fought without identification of any sort. Others wore state insignia and apparently not a few fashioned devices for themselves....Very few orders or specifications governing insignia have been found." (p.431) and later: "Despite the fact that the Confederate Congress authorized the President to bestow 'medals with proper devices' and 'badges of distinction' as rewards for valor and good conduct, only one such is known to have been issued....[to] an element of the 1st Texas Heavy Artillery Regiment, for its gallant and vigorous defense of the fortifications at Sabine Pass, Texas." (p.440)

There is a magazine that might be of some help, Military Collector & Historian which may lead to an expert or informed individual.
