I am proceeding cautiously for just that reason. However I do have a comtemporary document stating that such a badge did exist, at least in some sharpshooter battalions of the ANV. This badge, which is similar to the one described, came via the Maryland Old Soldier's Home from the effects of a Confederate veteran who died there. It now resides in the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore.

This would be a skill badge in the modern sense rather than an award for valor.
